My substrate is starting to get covered by brown algae?!?

How canI prevent my substrate from getting covered with brown algae. I have a sand bed of about 3.5 inches. My cleaner crew consists of 5 hermit crabs in a 30gal FOWLR. What other livestock should I look into to get my sand bed cleaned up. I would prefer my sandbed to stay white instead of brown.

Hi There.

How old is your tank? If it is less than about 3 months it is normal and will go away on its own. It is caused by diatoms and they thrive on Phosphates. Are you using ro/di water. If not you will need to put some phosgaurd or something in the sump or filter and it will help to clear it up.

It is less than 3 months old, but I do use RO/DI water. The algae is on the base rocks and glass too.

I just noticed that this brown algae I have is growing all over the place and that my coralline algae isn't noticably spreading, but maybe even going away. Is this normal or what? I know that coralline doesn't like a lot of light. Should I turn off my lights. I do have some zoanthids in the tank, that's why my lights are on all day. Just wondering when I should expect the coraline alge to start spreading. My params are amonia-0, nitrite-0, nitrate-0

The fighting conch really helped with my sand muck. I'd get three for a 30g, six for a 75.

AquaC Complete really helped my coraline. I've tried other two parts, but this one stood out with a noticable difference in my tank.

I have 2x maxi-jet 1200s in my display. My overflow box flows 300gph and I have a magdrive 5 (500gph) turned down a little so roughly 300gph return.
