Dripping Trumpet......NEED ADVICE

About 4 months ago my trumpet decided to go CRAZY. Splitting left and right. I didn't think it was ever gonna stop. Well, it finally stopped about a month ago. I have been keeping my calcium between 420-450.

The problem is this, all heads are attached, except one is dripping off of the backside of the colony, and flapping in the current. It is like it is still splitting from the original head, but it is only hanging on by its flesh. It has a bit of a hard skeleton at the very base of the head. Eventually it is going to finish splitting from the original head and fly around my tank.

What should I do???? Should I let it do its thing and then secure it somewhere so it can finish making it's skeleton, or is it a lost cause??

Actually, I think it may be TWO heads, from the looks of these pictures. Don't mind the color, haven't quite figured out my camera yet, and I had to manual focus but ya'll can see what I'm talking about. ~~~ Any advice or suggestions??

TIA for any help and Happy Reefing,
Brianna

This looks to be a way of reproduction. i have seen it on hammer corals before. I cant remember the name exactly but T belivet that it apears to be a good thing. HTH, Tim

Tim, thanks for the response. I know it is reproducing/splitting. But my question is this..........
Once it splits off from the original head, what do I do with it?? Should I secure it somewhere or once it drops from the orig. head, will it wither and die??

TIA,
Brianna

i have heard of trumpets doing this. where the flesh leaves the skeleton. most the time the flesh will grab hold of the LR somewhere and start a new colony. if you are able to capture it while free floating in the tank i suppose you can use some mesh material to hold it where you want it until it grabs hold. just like you would do with a mushroom or something. my trumpets have never done that so i couldnt say for sure. it may just wither away.

Thanks Paintbug, hearing it from someone else makes me feel much better. I think it just split so many times, the skeleton couldn't catch up with the flesh. It has a little bitty bit of skeleton at the base of the dripping head so I suppose I'll have to wait and see. Maybe by the time it finally "drips" free, it will have made a little bigger skeleton and I'll be able to super glue it.

Again, Thankyou

Happy Reefing,
Brianna

You might even try a bead of superglue on a rock to see if you can get it to 'take'. This would have to be done above the surface, and quickly.

Superglue was invented as a human wound sealant for wartime, and is still used in veterinary applications, so strong as it is, it will not harm the coral 'skin.'
