industrial metal halides

is there anything wrong with using industrial metal halides rather thank the ones specifically for aquariums?

the bulbs can be replaced with aquarium bulbs.

Why do people not use these?

lots of people do you those,
others don't know any better and pay a lot more for a brand that advertizes to the aquarium market.

Besides the bulbs being a completely different color the ballasts are usually a cap and coil type magnetic ballast and not an electronic ballast. You must also make sure it is a true Metal Halide and not a High Pressure Sodium ballast as they are a different frequency and most aquarium bulbs will not work with them.

Often times the industrial bulbs are 4000 Kelvin so it will give you a very yellow look to the aquarium. Check the Kelvin.
