To Drill or Overflow

I was pondering making one of these...

http://www.3reef.com/forums/i-made/n...low-29396.html

However, after listeing to the talking reef podcast about safeguarding the system.

http://www.talkingreef.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1082

He talked about clogging and critters.

I'm leaning again on just drilling the tank. Covey's overflow seems really safe, but Drilling really seems the safest bet for never overflowig your tank.

If I drill, would it be just as effective to add a horiz. tube with holes in it for surface skimming?

As I can't search this forum any more, can someone link to a DIY thread on drilling and how to tweak it?

I'm also thinking of adding a bit of redundancy if it's cost effective. (again, the pod cast) and getting two smaller pumps rather than one larger mag. Thoughts on that?
