I want a Naso Tang, tell me I can have one
I have a 90 gallon, 48" wide and I love Naso tangs. I know they grow, I know they need room, if a 90 enough for them? Will they stay smaller if in a smaller tank and not get to massive proportions?

No, I assume you are talking about a literatus. It will be ok for awile in a 90 but they do get very large. It would likely die prematurely never reaching its potential in a 90. Sorry.

By being in a smaller tank you could possibly stunt their growth but I wouldn;t advise that. That would jsut lead to them be stressed out 24/7 and an unhealthy fish. I wouldn;t do it if I were you I would put a naso in a min of a 6' tank.

So what would be a good tang that has great coloring that would be comfortable in a 90 reef.

Kole, hepatus and powder blue are also very nice tangs for a tank your size. The zebrosoma tangs are nice too as stated by Xtrstangx, but the sailfin -veliferum, desjardin-, get too large over time for a 90. They can really get huge, and if you get one of them plan on trading it in or getting a larger tank down the road. It's too bad because they are tough tangs and have the best personalities. I have had two and both of them were/are the tamest most interactive fish I have ever had. The one I have now is a little guy -4 inches- but growing fast, over an inch in the last 8 weeks.

Had the hippo, a bit to skiddish, mine was more skiddish than a yellow I had 15 years ago. I do like the Kole, the red sea one looks great and the power blue is another beautiful fish. My Naso from a bunch of years ago was fantastic, not skiddish, saw me and said, Feed me, followed me, I really loved that fish. But, I am not willing to go over the 90 and reading how some of these tangs have personality make me want one even more. But alas, I must be responsible.
thanks for the ideas. I don't usually trust web sites that say minimum tank 90 gallons, I guess for a small Naso, but what about when it grows up. rich |

I'd stay away from a Dejardni Sailfin. They get very big. I would say in a 90, you could probably get away with a yellow, purple, and possibly a hippo. Eventually even them will get cramped so plan to give em to a good home when needed or ugprade.

everyone has had some good imput though i'd stay away from the powderblue for its ability to stress out and get ick. Just another easy fish to kill IMO.

Yes, true about the p.b. I have never kept one though hear they are difficult. Probably skip that unless you are very confident about the quality and stability of your system.
If you have a ton of money how about z. gemmatum, lol. I hear they are as hardy as most of the zebrasomas but rare and spendy. Would be a real showpiece for your tank though.

I'd skip the powder blue too...just doesn't seem like enough room for them.
I'd also second the vote for either a yellow or a kole. I currently have a kole in my 75g (same footprint as a 90g) and she is doing great. Calmly cruises the tank all day picking at the glass and rocks...then goes nuts when I give her nori! ![]() Good luck! Chris |
