Does my overflow have to match my return pumps GPH?
Hi,
I have a 40 gallon breeder tank. I am trying to figure out what size bulkhead to use draining it into my sump/fuge. My question is, does my overflow have to match the gph the manufacturer states is on their pump? I am also designing a closed loop system. I would like to know if anyone has suggestions on my overflow bulkhead size, return pump, and my closed loop pump? I want to keep clams, Hammer Coral, Open Brain, Various Soft Corals, Orange Caps, and more challenging one's in the future. I would really appreciate some help. I've posted a couple times before with no response. How are Quiet One Pumps? Dr Fosters and Smith Recommend them the most. Please help. Thank you. |

Your overflow doesn't have to match it. However, your pump must not be rated for more than what your overflow is. For example: my overflow is rated for 600 gph, the return pump I use should be for 600 gph or LESS. The one I use is rated like 650 gph. The reason I used a larger rated pump is because my water must be pumped up 4 feet and through a 90* pvc elbow. The height and elbow slow down flow signifigantly. So, the actual output of my pump is under 600 gph.
Oh yeah, my bulkhead is 1.5 in. I have never used the quiet one pumps. Hope this helps |

Aer you using a hang on continuous siphon overflow or is your tank drilled. If it is a hang on then yes it has to mach, If your tank is drilled the return pump needs to be what your overflow is rater for or less.

I have and use Quiet One pumps. Well made, but they do sometimes have a problem with restart after a power outage or if you just shut them off.
I think I have fixed the problem so far on my 4000. Only time will tell, but they are nice pumps.

Hi,
I am going to drill my overflow on my tank. What would you guys drill the hole at? I have the options of drilling either 3/4", 1", 1-3/16", 1-3/8", 1-5/8" @ 1 depth or so. What would you suggest and how much flow would it be? I am looking at the Quiet one pumps. They are a good price and I've already spent so much on lighting and my skimmer. Or either a Mag drive. What would you guys suggest? I am going to also do a closed loop and am looking for a good pump for that. What would you recommend for that? I am looking to keep clams, frowspawn, mushrooms, open brains, hammer corals, orange caps, and others. DRC what problem did you have with your Quiet One? How did you fix it? I need to know when doing maintenance and shutting off pumps etc. Thank you all.

For my 40 cube, I did a Quiet One 3000 return and a Quiet One 5000 for my closed loop. My overflow drain is a 1" with a 3/4" return drilled. You can click my homepage (little red house) to see the details. I've had Mag pumps and Quiet One pumps and the Quiet One pumps are by far the more quiet pump. If you are shopping around for price, www.bigalsonline.com has the best price anywhere for the QuietOne pumps. Hope this helps.

Dr. Foster has Quiet One pumps On-Sale NOW.
Good size 1" drain and 3/4" return but if you can I would do dual returns, Two 3/4' returns. Just my 2 cents.

The only problem with running a significantly lower flow rate than a U-tube design HOB overflow is rated for is that small air bubbles could accumulate in the U-tube. Having a faster flow rate tends to flush the bubbles out. |

Hi Calvin,
I've followed your tank progress before. Your tank was professionally done. =( Which mine won't be. Mine is AGA and I won't be able to drill the bottom of the tank. Do you still think I should go with your same set up? I was thinking of the 1 in overflow draining tube, but I've heard they make a lot of noise when draining. Does yours? Do you use a durso standpipe? Do you know where I can get the overflow boxes already made online? I like the adjustable baffle yours has. I haven't been able to find them anywhere online. Esp since I will have to drill mine from the back of the tank and not the bottom. What is the OM Squirt for? Random flow? I can't do the PVC piping on top of the aquarium like you did yours. I will not have a canopy. I wish I would have made my stand taller. My skimmer won't fit inside so I am going to have to hang it outside the sump by the back wall. =( Hope the cats don't get interested in my ref. I am going to have to cover it up. So to create flow in the front of the tank as well, I was going to buy some long loc-line ball socket flexible tubing. Or something of that nature to T off to run flow in the front as well. Hope that makes sense. Any suggestions? The overflow was going to go in the middle of the tank as suggested from our Reef Aquarium store here. Do you think it should go in the corner? Just didn't know how all the poo and debris would get to it if it was in the corner of the tank. Esp if I have 2 nozzles in the back blowing across each other and then 2 in the front doing the same. I like your ideas on the Quiet One's. How have they been working for you? Do you have any trouble starting them up again say during maintenance or a power outage?

Also, What type of corals are you going to keep in your tank? I have an Aqualight Pro with 150 MH and 2 65 watt actinics. I would like to keep Clams in particular for their awesome coloration, frowspawn, hammer coral, Orange Cap, White Pom Pom Pumping Xenia, Mushrooms in low flow and low light areas, Evergreen Starburst Polyps, Bushy Acropora is what I'd like to keep in the future when my skills grow. Just some possibilities for the future. But are my lights going to be sufficient? I notice you used a 250 MH. Mine is only 150 plus the 2 65 watt PC's. That gives me 7 watts per gallon. I thought this would be sufficient for what I wanted to keep, but did I miscalculate? Thank you for your help.

DR I was thinking of doing the 1 in overflow and also the 2 3/4 in returns T off to 2 more in the front for extra flow. I don't want dead spots. What do you think? I just got the DR Foster and Smith Catalog in the mail. I will check big als compared to drs. Do you guys know of any good live rock online? The stuff in the stores here is crap.
Theop cute fish. Thank you for your reply. What type of fish is that?

Here's a diagram, of a couple ideas that would work for you depending on where you drilled. As for the overflow boxes, you can get them here, if you really want to go that route let me know, I'm sure I could build one for you a lot cheaper than these... http://www.wetdryfilter.com/internal_overflow_boxes.htm The OM is purely for random flow and for a 15 gallon IMO it's really not needed. If you insist I would go with a SCWD on a closed loop instead. I would put the overflow in the center of the tank as well especially with all the return ports you are talking about, however without a canopy to cover them it might not look great. I'd just go with 1 return through the overflow and then T that into 2, one for each side. If you still need more flow add a closed loop so you can get the flow lower in the tank. I love the quiet ones but if I had it over to do I would run it externally on the return instead of submersed. They are quiet, but they get really hot. As for start ups, I have had them not start after some maintenance, but after about 20-30 seconds they got going again, so I'm not sure what's up with that. For your lighting, I think that would be fine. I did 250 cause it wasn't much more than 150 and in either case I think it would be fine for your tank, it's pretty shallow. BTW, you don't want to look at watts per gallon, watts is just how much electricity is used, it's not a good indicator of how bright the lights actually are. For example a 70w MH is still a lot brighter than 96w of PC lighting. I'm doing SPS, LPS and Clams in my tank and I'm in the planning stages of a clam only tank w/ another 250w MH (only because I already have it) but I would be fine if I only had a 150W HQI... Hope this answers your questions, feel free to ask any others I might have missed.

why? i dont think 40br's have any tempered glass. I didn't drill the bottom either, but just wanted to let you know. I use a quiet one pump for my sump return. I run a mag 9 for the closed loop through the scwd. i don't much care for the drop in gph due to it's restrictions though. i might change it. i have 2 1" drains in the top corners for the overflow. |

Would you suggest drilling the bottom then for the overflow? If I just used 2 return lines for my closed loop with flare nozzles, do you think that would provide me enough flow through my tank? I would just be worried about dead spots in the front of the aquarium. I know coralife says not to place their lights in canopy's, but do you think it could be done without being dangerous? If I added extra fans to the sides and left the back open? That way I could do the PVC through the top like you Calvin and add flow to the front of my tank. Just wondering what you guys think. Calvin, have you made overflows before? Can I see? How much would you charge me. =) I thought you put random flow through your tank using the OM. Maybe I was wrong. Spmedi what size Quiet One do you use? How hot does it make the tank? Thank you all. =)

Another question. I want a sump/refugium. If I make the overflow in the center of the aquarium, wouldn't that mean I'd have to make the intake in the middle of the sump? I wouldn't be able to utilize as much space. I usually see people with their sumps as follows " intake-refugium-uptake into display." Just a little confused about placement since the overflow would most likely be coming in the middle of the sump. =/ Another quick question, I am going to keep a refugium for growth of pods, my question is, if I have the section of the refugium flow into the uptake to my display, will the pods make it into my display tank? Or will I have to add them manually? Thank you.

Okay,
I was informed that I can hook on a 90* tube and then arrange it through pvc to drain into my sump. Will this slow down my GPH? Should I make the overflow 1 1/2 in instead of 1 in? It seems to me it might slow it down a bit if I want to use the Quiet One 3000. Please let me know. Thank you.

Hey guys can you please help? I need to order the stuff. Should I go with 1 1/2 overflow or 1 in? Please let me know. Thank you.

If you look at the flow to head chart here, it looks like flow is about 600 gph at 4 feet. IMO that is right on the cusp of what a 1" overflow can handle (I've had 2 1" overflows and they were both rated at 600 gph). The elbow in your drain will slow it down just a little.
If you are worried about it, get a 1 1/2" bulkhead. The 1" would probably be ok but you may have to reduce the pump output a bit. Another way to go would be to have dual 1" drains. Unless it is too difficult or too expensive to do it this way, that would be my preference. |

Actually, i think 1" may be ok.
For comparison purposes, here are some overflows from CPR. They have a 1" bulkhead rated for 800 gph. Their 1.5" bulkhead is rated at 1600 gph. |

Well the fix for the Quiet One did not work. So time for a pump change.
To may power outages right now to take a chance on these pumps. Did you go with the 1" or 1 1/2" drain??? I think a 1" will be just find that's what I have on my 40RR. If you go with a 1" drain make your durso-pipe out of 1 1/4" PVC make sure you use 1 1/4". 1" will not work well, I know I tryed.

Hey DRC where did you place the Quiet One Pump? They wouldn't start up when the power was turned off? Maybe I won't go with them then. Calvin said it only took his about 20 to 30 seconds to start up again. How were you using them? Internally or externally? I am not sure yet. What pump are you thinking of getting? That really sucks. I liked the quiet one's.
Hey Theop. I am not using the siphon overflow though. I am going to drill the tank and run it through the pvc down to the sump. I don't like the siphon overflow because of the flood possibility. I live in an Apartment and it would be really bad news for me if it broke siphon. Thank you for the marine depot link. I figured it out and it would be running up only 4 feet. Which would decrease the flow to 600 gph. So All I need to know is if 1 in bulkhead drilled to the tank would provide enough flow through my sump to keep up with the pump. What do you all think? Thank you.

I put the pump in my sump. I have and use Rios, so I now have a HF17 in there. I like it, I'm also going to try my Rio 3100 PLUS I have to. Quiet One nice pumps but if it doesn't start right up forget.
I would go with the 1", it works. Remember 1 1/4" durso-pipe.

The point of the overflow comparison is that they had ones with a 1" and 1.5" drain. The bulkhead in the tank would be no worse than the overflow and would probably be faster. Based on that 1" should be able to handle 600gph easily.
