Sea Hare

Are these good or bad for a reef tank? I have read they are great hair algea eaters, my tank is 180 and has just a little hair algea growing on some rocks in a few places.

Very good at removing HA though you may find almost to good. (may run out of food)

Your tank is large enough for a sea hare. One caveat, though: if it becomes startled, it might release a toxic purple dye. You will need a good chemical filter system to quickly remove the dye before it poisons the rest of the tank.

When mine died didn't do anything and I found it several days later, it was really stinky , but it only was about 2 - 2.5"

I would only recommend using it short term to rid your tank of hair algae, then you need to pass it along to perhaps another reefer in your area or club member that has a similar problem. They will starve if they run out of food, and they tend to eat very quickly.

I have read, and talked to several reefers who have said that whole purple dye thing is not true. Some have told me that their sea hare got sucked into the powerhead and it still didn't release any dye. Anyone actually see them shot out dye?
