Mag 12, CPR CS100 Overflow question

I have a mag 12 return pump (1200GPH) and a CS100 overflow (800 GPH) by using simple math (1200 > 800) I think I'm going to need a ball valve to restrict my pump somewhat.

What side of the pump (intake vs output) should I put the ball valve to reduce the strain on the pump?

First to respond gets my leftover salami sandwich from lunch.

It's not that simple, the energy used to raise the water, overcome friction, and account for turns and elbows reduces the actual flow of water returning to your tank. It's called Head Loss

Click on the link and it'll take you to the head loss calculator.

Keep the salami sandwhich, it's past lunch time here.....

Thanks Agu.

I guess its obvious i'm a newb. Thanks for going easy on me.

I am pumping the water up about 4 feet from my sump. Sending it through a 1' Return U-Tube (2 x 90 degree angles) .. and the calculator said that my flow should be 792 GPH .. overflow maxes at 800 GPH, could I be that lucky?

Maybe you just live right .

BTW, any valve restricting a pump should be on the outflow side.
