They look nice.

Notice any growth? How long have you had them? How often do you feed and what?

I feed them like every other day or 3 times a week. I don't feed each individual polyp, I do spot feed...usually just squirt the food over their entire area (now if only i could get that darn cleaner shrimp to back off while feeding and not try and steal the food). I mix it up, one time i feed them cyclopeez and the next time krill and alternate like that.

When feeding you really should try to feed every polyp.I feed mine every other night. I usually feed a mix of mysis, plankton, brine, krill, cyclopeeze, squid and some others.

whiteshark I would like to do that but where i have them placed in my tank in a little cave-like area it's hard to get at each individual polyp...unless I take them out and put them on the sandbed each time i feed them which would be a pain but doable. Does anybody have their sunpolyps out in the open and not hidden from the light like they supposedly like?

Mine are in the open under 400w metal halides. I started out with only one polyp about 6mos ago. It has now spread into 6 or 7 polyps. I target feed two or three times a week. Sometimes less, Sometimes more.

I keep them exposed to light, it doesnt seem to matter to them. I've read that they don't care either way, as they are not photosensitive or reliant. I've experiemented with putting them in the shade, but it seems to make no difference. Their polyps extend when I am feeding the rest of the tank. I spot feed the entire piece 2-3 times per week, and never feed every polyp.

The Saltwater Kid, very nice looking sun polyps!
I too keep mine out in the open, it doesn't seem to make a difference. With their feeding necessity, it is always going to be difficult to keep them in a cave type spot. If you're really having problems with your cleaner shrimp, etc, stealing food, then cut off the top of a 2 liter soda bottle and place it over the sun polyps and feed through the bottle opening.
Mine stay closed all day, but they are like clockwork! They start opening up at about 7:45pm EVERY day, I feed the tank between 8-8:30. I spot feed each individual polyp on the colony every other night. The nights I don't tend to them, they still get food because they are in a spot where they get good flow(not too much though) and they catch whatever flows by them. I alternate feeding them silversides, squid, scallops, table shrimp, enriched brine, mysis, and cyclop-eeze. The last 3 I mix together to make one food. HTH

Good Luck and Happy Reefing!
Brianna

How much flow do they like? Mine get a fair amount of flow where they are and as you can see seem to like it. If I put them on the sandbed they might get slightly more flow...would that be OK? The soda bottle trick sounds like it would work, my cleaner shrimp is a very determined lil' bugger...lol.

The Saltwater Kid, as long as they are not getting "blasted" they should be just fine. Mine actually get heavy "indirect" flow, and they do just fine.

Now, a couple of weeks ago one of my monster red leg crabs decided to climb on my seio power head and had one heck of a party cuse he knocked it all askew and it was "blasting" my sun polyps for several hours while I slept. When I got up that morning my sun polyps were spewing orange stringy stuff (it's insides). But as soon as I got the "direct" flow off of them, they fixed themselves and are fine.

But, like you said, if the flow is only "slightly" stronger, they'll be fine

Good Luck, and Happy Reefing!
Brianna

The Saltwater Kid, my sun is directly under my lights and have had no problems. I use the "cup" method(tupperware bowl instead of a 2 liter top) and it has worked great to keep out my cleaner and fire shrimp while it feeds for as long as it wants.

I think it's a misconception that sun polyps need to be shaded. I've read they're found in various places on the reef.

Mine are out in the open under full lighting. I think they do best with a medium to strong flow though. I feed probably 3 times a week myself. I haven't seen much growth really, but I'm not losing polyps either. I'm thinking up stepping up the feedings.

Take 'em out of the shade, it shouldn't matter.
