Plumbing/surge idea

This would work a bit like a carlson surge device only some of the roles will be reversed. Instead of an external chamber emptying into the display the display itself would partially empty into the sump.

Not much would need to be done to build this, it would be a simple matter to just drill a hole and install a bulkhead on the back or side of the aquarium. A U-shape would be built with a large diameter pvc pipe so that as the return pump filled the aquarium it would cause a syphon and empty part of the aquaium at a relatively fast rate. Obviously a screen would need to be installed over the intake to prevent fish from being syphoned right into the sump. There are only 2 issues I see with this; there wouldn't be any real surface skimming to speak of and if the intake became clogged in any way the tank could overflow (although in theory this could happen to any aquarium if the teeth of the overflow became glogged). Any comments or suggestions?

There's no reason you couldn't install an additional, emergency overflow. If you're concerned about sucking animals in, you could also have multiple intakes to the siphon. It would risk breaking the siphon more easily, but you wouldn't get anemones clogging it.

Isn't this called a reverse CSD?

A RCSD is an internal chamber that uses air pressure to push water out and once it reaches a certain level all of the air escapes and water comes rushing back in. It would create a similar effect though.
