"fuzzy" live rock
I don't know how else to describe it but my live rock has become fuzzy. It does not look at all like algea. it is white and does not seem to cause any problems. Does anyone know what this is and if it means something is wrong? Thank in advance.

I will try to get a pic. Would a sponge look loose and feathery?

well I can't convert my pic to be availble for donload, but it basically looks like fuzzy cobwebs. It is not the production of vermetis snails, which I do have. It covers every inch of rock and fake matter I have in the tank. If it is sponge where could I find more info?

I hate to say it, but it does sound like the beginnings of algae.
I had the same problem with a few of my rocks. Just looked like little white threads about 1/8" long waving in the water? Then a bit later (weeks) they slowly turned green... Scrubbed them off with a tooth brush. Just a thought.

I think I've had the same problem for about 3 months now and Haven't been able to figure out exactly what it is.
You can kind of see it in this photo as a haze covering the rocks. It doesn't get any longer than a quarter of an inch: ![]() I hate it because it traps detritus and sand. Scrubbing it with a toothbrush helps to clean it but doesn't really remove it. I'm guessing that it is feeding off of nutrients in the water but I still don't know exactly what it is.

Mike89, I would say that is possibly Dictyota sp. macroalgae. Do some research as I think it is something that can be dreadful in the tank, and become an overwhelming headache...

i think i know what your talking about. it grows on my rocks, glass, and even on my algae. i think its some kind of super tiny micro algae that grows like mad. i think the fuzz is just single strands of cells.
i hate how it looks on the macro algae. |
