Is this a mantis shrimp
I think it is but want to be sure. I've heard the clicking and I think I found where he is hanging out:

I would say it is, but I'm not 100% sure due to the fuzziness in the picture.
The only other shrimp I know of that makes clicking noises you can hear is a Pistol Shrimp... But I would still say mantis....based on what I can see of the shape of the body

Sorry about the fuzzy
I converted it to a BMP to edit it to a smaller size. Let me see if I can't clean them up.
Its elusive to say the least so on that alone I think its a mantis |

Very hard to tell from the photos, but I would bet against mantis. I can really only make out the claws in the first pic and they aren't mantis claws. I would say possibly pistol shrimp but they usually have one claw that's a bit beefier than the other (the one that snaps).

I truely do not believe that to be a mantis. it has large forearms with two claws on each end.. not a characteristic of a mantis. Like a praying mantis.. it's usually a single arm doubled over... eiter with a blunt end or a spear end.. not what I am seeing in the photo

yeah for sure a pistol see how one claw is different than the other? also the mantis keeps its claws tucked under it, kind of like the praying mantis insect thats where it gets the name.

Although the picture is fuzzy, I would say pistol shrimp too.

Thank you all - I think I'll keep him for a while then.
If I get a better pic I'll post it - he certainly is shy. Not sure where he came from but one day just heard clicking. Been a month or two since I added anything. Must have been growing in the tank for a while. |
