Clumps of stuff in my tank... ID please?

Ok, I know I just posted about dirty substrate a minute ago, but I have more questions!

My live rock has been developing these clumps of maroon-colored, spongy, soft-looking clumps or growths in certain areas. It doesn't look like cyano...it's not blue-green or red, but more like a really dark maroon color. Sometimes, a piece would break off the live-rock and just float around on the bottom. I would then have to retrieve and discard it.

I can't really say I've seen anyone else post about this...but I'm sure there's a really easy answer to what it is, and whether or not it's harmful for the tank chemistry. Any ideas?

A picture would be better, but it does sound like cyano.
