bad idea, do yourself favor and buy yourself a stake dinner and throw it on the dirt floor. It will be less money you will lose than the livestock that you will kill.

too much keep on them for a saltwater tank. do a sump system and call it a day.

I you are using the canister filter for a FOWLR than it should be sufficient. The main drawback to canister filters is that they produce nitrates very quickly, but since most fish are unaffected by nitrates it shouldn't matter. If you don't want the hassle of a sumped system canister filters would be your best bet.

You might look at Filstar also but if you can afford Eheim go for it. It is easy to disconnect and clean the Filstar media regularly. I clean mine weekly, if anything people will argue that's not enough. For my reef tank, I gradually removed the biomedia, and sometimes run filter pads inc a micron filter but lately I'm trying just a bag of carbon sitting in the bottom - with FOWLR I'd use bio media and filter pads tho. If you keep it clean it won't produce ridiculous nitrates IME.

If you can't go with a sump (my situation) its good to have the circulation and chemical filtration.

I run Eheim canister with LRs and carbon inside but took out the filter pads.
