Sponge or egg sack?pic
I have these on several rocks in my tank and I was wondering if anyone knows what they are. They have vents like a sea squirt and feel spongy.
Also, what are the brownish orange looking polyps on the left. There are tons of them on that particular rock. Should I be concerned? [IMG][/IMG] |

White sponge id
OOOPS!!! Sent wrong picture. The white stuff on encrusting gorgonia in the above post is the same as in this picture, but the brownish orange stuff I was speaking of is in this picture along with more of the white spongy stuff. Here it is...

It could be a sponge, but they are kind of odd, they are in my tank too, but usually in dark areas. I assumed they were eggsacs for some pods.

The polyps could be hydroids, but they are usually pretty small. They sting corals that they are near.

im pretty sure those polyps are hydroids, not good. you will want to remove them if possible.
the white stuff is a sponge, possiblly Clathrina sp.. but its near impossible to ID a sponge by pics alone. other than its a sponge.

get a more focused picture of those polyps if you can...its difficult to see them because they're in the dank...but ya scratch what i said on the first one about the polyps lol. i was thinking you were talking about the whole big coral
I dont think that pods would lay an eggsack like that either...so i'm almost positive its a sponge..i've got tons of pods just crawling over my tank and i've never seen anything like that.

Here are some closer shots of the polyps. Sorry I couldn't get them any clearer, but they are so tiny. There are hundreds of them on this one rock and they are barely noticeable. Some larger than others. But, they are getting bigger. I have a purple mushroom on the same rock.

Sir dude,
It does resemble apstasia, but I also did a search on hydroids and it resembled them as well. Either way, I need to eventually get rid of it. It's a good thing that the rock it is on is small and movable. Now I have to decide which weapon of destruction to use...JJ or natural predator. Ya know what? After looking at the picture again it might even be both apstasia and hydroids. Man when it rains it pours!!!! Anyway, thanks for your help dude and everyone !! |
