Lost my flagfin today
I just arrived home and found my beautiful flagfin angel dead on the bottom of my 65g. I'm devastated, he was hands down my favourite fish. When I bought him he was a skinny little thing, but over the past eight months he's grown into a fat, healthy fish and became a real pet. He was only about 2.5" long, and I was already planning a much bigger tank for his future... now there's just an empty space in my reef where Midas used to be. I've lost plenty of fish over the years, but this one was really hard.
RIP Midas, I'll miss you terribly. |

sorry to hear that. Do you have any idea what caused his death?

Not a clue. He was in captivity for four months before I got him; he was eating, but I don't know if he was fed properly -- he'd gotten pretty thin and had the start of HLLE; maybe being malnourished affected him in some way I couldn't see, but he looked outwardly healthy to me. Once I got him home and settled, his eating just got better and better and he gained weight well. I had him for eight or nine months, he just got fatter and healthier looking every month. He was such a pet -- he begged for his breakfast every morning, never took any crap from the other fish but didn't dish any out either. He was the 'boss' of the tank, so I don't think he was beaten up. His behaviour, colouration and eating habits were completely normal this morning when I left the house. My husband said he heard a bang earlier that sounded like the eggcrate being hit, and expected to come into the living room and find our fairy wrasse on the floor again (he's a regular escape artist) but once he saw the wrasse swimming about he didn't think to check on the rest of the fish. I'm wondering if something spooked the angel and he got hurt, but I can only guess. By the time I saw him the crabs had started their work so examining him for cuts and bruises was pretty futile.
I did enjoy the time I had with him, he was a gorgeous fish full of personality. I'm glad I have a place to talk about this -- ever try explaining to a non-reefer why you're in tears over 'just a fish'? They just don't get it.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. My flag is just about the coolest fish I have ever kept, I can only imagine how bad you must feel. I lost an achilles tang just like this, doing great for years and dead on the bottom one afternoon without a mark on him, thats what is so hard to take, just no clue as to why. Flags, like the achilles, are pretty touchy fish and I cant help but wonder if there is something in their diets we are missing. Sorry again for your loss.

Thanks guys. I really do miss him, it's amazing how attached I was to the little guy. I was looking forward to seeing him mature, I had visions of him swimming around a 120g (or larger if I could get my husband to agree) as the centerpiece. To top things off, I was going to bed last night and noticed our cat staring at a puddle next to the stand... turns out the tank had sprung a leak. When it rains, it pours.
