killer serpent star and crazy sponge crab?!

ok.. i have 2 real weird things going on...

1. serpent stars.. evil or not? i cannot keep peppermint shimp alive w/ my serpent star. the LFS dude told me he was my tank killer.. is he!? i kinda love him & don't want to send him away. Anyone know if they are silent peppermint shimp killers?

2. got a new coral from a friend.. picked it up & the top part moved.. it was a crab covered in sponge! wasn't a decorator crab, different shape! definitely an emerald crab w/ yellow sponge. wish i had a camera, but was shocked to find him! we put him in the tank & he crawled off looking like a little furry teddy bear. could emerald crabs decorate too?
