silence a drilled tank with a custom overflow box
the question is how can i reduce the sound of the water rushing in and down my over flow box. i have a 75 gallon with the left top corner drilled and a 5"x5"x4" (rough guess) over flow box that has slits for the water to go through and down a "pool hose" to my trickle filter? any suggestions welcomed the wife cant sleep!

Search for instruction on how to assemble an inexpensive Stockman or Durso standpipe. Very easy to make out of about $2 worth of PVC parts.

dunno of you can fit a durso or stockman into a 5x5x4 box. is the sound you are getting from water waterfalling into the box, air getting slurped into the bulkhead, water rushing down the drain hose, or splashing/bubbles in the sump?
i have a similar small overflow box in the top corner of my tank (check little red house for pics) and to keep the waterlevel in the box high enough that it wouldn't splash or slurp air i put an up elbow on the outside of the tank then it loops over, has a tee to vent, and drops down to the sump. the up elbow is not directly up/down but at an angle. |

ur right i have a different style box. i think the sound is a combo of the water entering the box and slurping down the drilled hole fitting. i to have the t fitting with a cap that has a drilled hole on top. will a prefilter in that box help any you think?

The Stockman standpipe should fit. Its only the size of a 2" PVC coupling, maybe 2.75 to 3" at the most.

You should be able to install a 90 degree elbow and put the standpipe on top of that. I think Ken Stockman has a website showing several different examples of how its done.
