Remove large plugs?

I picked up several new SPS for my tank last week.

The problem I am having is that the plugs on which they are mounted are quite large and thus its difficult to find a place in the reef they can be put.

Is it OK to detach the plug?

If so how would you recomend doing so?

Yes, you can detach them. Usually you can pry them off, or else just cut them off at the base with a heavy scissor or side cutter of some sort. Use some superglue gel to remount your frag, and you're golden.

I pretty much remove all plugs, only two in my tank out of 45+ corals, many came on plugs. They are usually pretty easy to snap right off with a pair of needle nose plyers or as otolith mentioned cutting with heavy scissors or heavy duty cutters of some kind. I have a frag cutting kit I bought with really sharp cutters that cut through easily. The plugs can be a pain to find homes for and often have undesireable algae growing on them which I don;t want to introduce into my tank.
