Placement of coral?
I just ordered a torch coral and a bubble coral.
first of How do you handle them? (accilimate, should I wear gloves?, etc) These should be placed on bottom of tank correct? I beleive they will be attached to rock, do you take them off the rock or leave them? I have 130watts and a 55gal, Im going to upgrade my light soon like a month or so. anything else i should no? First time Im adding corals so bear with me. |

I wear gloves when working in the tank or with animals. Many people don't; some regret that choice.
I'd start them at the bottom of the tank, and move them up as needed for light. That light is pretty dim, though, so maybe you could start further up. Acclimation is as for fish, in my opinion. I wouldn't detach them from the rock unless that's needed to fit your aquascaping, and then you'd need to be careful.

I've never really tried that with stony corals. I'd be afraid of damaging the coral, personally, but you could try carefully chipping the live rock away.

well with a 130 watt light i would put closer to surface. must think way ahead with coral , find a spot they like by positioning around then mount . i guess you can always move later but what if it doent like the new spot or just dies. all that hard work gone .least this is all i gathered from listing and reading . also try the lps room mb get more answers

Handle them carefully, try not to touch the flesh, they're delicate and in addition they can sting you -- I get a nasty rash if I contact any Euphyllia corals when I'm working in my tank (which is why I bought shoulder length gloves).
You can use a two-part putty epoxy or superglue gel (any gel cyanoacrylate is fine) to fix them in place if needed. What I usually do is try to find a spot where the coral fits well, and then use glue/epoxy as extra security (I have an urchin that likes to bulldoze things). Bubbles have a very strong sting, try to leave lots of room to accomodate expansion and possible sweepers. IME they also grow fairly quickly, so you may want to keep that in mind when you're placing it. Both the bubble and the hammer will appreciate low-medium flow. Enough movement to 'toss' the hammer's tentacles is fine, but direct or harsh flow can damage their flesh. 130W of PC isn't much light, but these guys aren't too demanding. They'd probably be fine anywhere in the tank, but I'd place them closer to the top -- if you're planning to get things like mushrooms or an undemanding leather, that might be a better choice for the bottom.

The advice above is all good.
Additionally, torch (Euphyllia) will like just enough flow to make it sway, but not feel blown too hard. Better to place them where you best believe they'll be happy and let them adjust, then to start them in one place and then move them around frequently. What light did they come from? If much higher than yours, then you don't need to worry about placing them on the bottom. If similar, then just put them where you want them to be. If MUCH higher, then you probably need to place them high to compensate. Good luck!
