refugium or sump
im a bit confused on this terminology.
i have a acrylic box in my stand that the water from the tank goes into thru t he bio balls and thru some carbon and then back to the tank. is this a sump or a fuge? i've seen adds and posts mixing the names together and vice versa my reason asking is because i want to build or buy the opposite of what i have. i am getting ready to remove the CC from my tank bottom and replace it with sand, and use a fuge or sump withsome LR and sand with some micro algae to bring down my outta control nitrate problem. i been to melev's site and got some good ideas from there. any help with this would be most grateful. |

Right now you have a sump. The fuge is what your looking to get. Fuge has the macro, some sand, a rubble pile and so on. You may want to think about removing your bioballs(slowly). Ive heard nothing but negative things about them.

A sump is a "tank" that holds additional water volume which most people use to add top=off water, test for water parameters, set probes and heaters in as hide skimmer in out of plain view.
A Refugium is a "tank" that ads additional volume of water with some biodiversity in terms of Macro Algae, LS, LR, etc... to help natuarlly control things like nitrates. Many times, a "sump" contains a chamber that acts like a "refugium" in it. HTH Chris

Yea it would be a wet/dry. I categorize a wet/dry with sumps. It hold additional water and you can put your heaters and stuff in there.
