Whoops, dumped the skimmate... in the sump!
Ok, did a water change and was going to clean my skimmer cup. As I was unscrewing the collar, I got a little overzealous and knocked the cup off. It was about half full and it looks like half of the skimmate went into the sump and the rest onto the floor. Should I be concerned about anything?

I've dont the same thing a couple of times without harming anything. Just dial back the skimmer a bit,,,, my ES5-2 went nuts.

Heh... Yeah, I accidentally did similar the other day in a tank that was curing some live rock. The skimmer went crazy and I kept having to dump the collection cup every few minutes until it settled down. A short while later, the skimmer had reclaimed about the same amount I had dumped and all was well.
Now, on my main tank... I have the opposite problem. My skimmer decided to just stop skimming. Hasn't produced a drop in 3 or 4 days.

No sweat, I mean, that water is where the skimmate came from in the first place! It'll skim it out again.

Thanks all. I figured it'd be ok, but some extra opinions always help put my mind at ease.

If the skimmer took it out once, it should take it out again. No worries.

Haven't done that (yet) but I think I'd turn off the return pump for a while to try to keep that stuff from going back to the display. Depending on how long it's been in the cup, there's bound to have been a certain amount of decay taking place. I wouldn't want that to hit the display with a shot of nitrates etc.

You could probably skip the next dose of DT's Phyto.
Saved yourself a little money as an added bonus. And yep, I once spilled the drop of skimmate from the Prizm back into the tank along with the collection cup. Saved me the trouble of rinsing it and everything seemed pretty happy about it....even me. |

Been there, done that. Funny thing is, It took a week to skim that much initially, but after i spilled it into the sump, it only took a day to reskim it back out! No worries.

I actually was having good skimmate. I didn't think it was doing that great and turned it up a notch. I watched it after an hour or two and seemed fine. Next morning it was just dumping water through the lid of my Vertex 180i. All the Skimmate just went right back into my sump and a little all over the floor of my cabinet...
Once I dialed it in through the day and cleaned it out again. Hopefully this time I have it dialed in and don't have to call in late to work because of "plumbing issues"... Sure as hell couldn't tell my work it was my aquarium dumping fish poop all over the place. You know your employer will never understand why your tank is more important than you job...LOL!!! |
