sump flow

What do you think the max flow for a 40 gal breeder tank sump with 2 bubble traps could be ? I am using it on a 120 with dual overflows rated at 600 gph each and I have a mag 1800 ,with head loss should be around 1100 - 1200 ? I will be using a 20 gal for the refug , so it will not be in the sump. I am also going to build a closed loop for the tank.

That's basically exactly what im running- 125 with 1 overflow at 1200gph,

I use a mag 18 but i run and in sump refugium and it is smaller overall sump but it works for me.

I bleed a little bit off the return to keep the flow down a little, not at 1200, maybe like 900-1000gph is goin through.

I supplement with powerheads for now. I would love to build a closed loop but drilling glass sucks and i don't have any money right now cus im still in teenage wasteland.

A lot depends on how you plumb the Mag. To get decent flow out of it, you need 1.5" plumbing. If it is plumbed with undersized pipe, flow will be consideably less.

IMO/E, since you're going to have a closed loop anyway, slow down your flow through your sump. 10X is a lot. Ideally, depending on your skimmer, you should try to have as much or less flow coming from the tank as is being drawn into the skimmer. That way ALL the overflow water from the tank gets processed by the skimmer. This has worked very well for me.

Yes I jumped right to 1.50 from the pump with a ball valve than
Tee off to two 3/4 returns.

SDguy :
havent picked a new skipper yet , right now I have a
etss reef devil on my 54 gal. What skimmer (And flow) do you like for a 120 gal with 40 gal sump and 20 gal refug.

I've always done less flow from the tank, than flow into the skimmer. For example, when I had my hex, I had a mag 5 feeding the tank, with a mag 7 feeding the DIY CC needlewheel skimmer. Both had the same head height.

My new tank I only run about 2-3X flow from tank to sump. The GenX easily draws all this overflow water into the MR2 skimmer. Very happy with the results so far.

I looked at that closed loop too. I am running about 1000gph thru the sump right now. I am gonna bring the flow down a bit once i get my sump rebuilt.

My skimmer is an old skool etss 600. It pumps about 800 gph with a via aqua 3300 runing it.
