Im not sure on how much rock you should put in there. As far as the cycle goes, the less the rock you buy is out of water the less of a cycle you will have. In my nano-reef i did not see a cycle at all, but my rock only spent about 20 minutes out of water and the whole time it was covered with wet paper. I would say to get lr from someone close to you, try to keep it wet and monitor your parameters for a couple weeks. You might get lucky and see no cycle or a mini cycle.

I think Coral paradise in Arlington Heights is the best place for live rock.
When Jim gets a shipment, he cures it in his basement for weeks, until it's ready. Only then will he sell it. Then you have virtually no cycle time for the rock. It seems all the other stores get a shipment and put it in their tanks and offer it for sale right away. I don't see how the rock can be cured if it just arrived from a multiday journey wrapped in wet paper.
