My pump is SO LOUD!

I have a mag 7 and it is extreamly loud so I was wondering if an external pump would be quieter of if there is some kind of foam pad that I can put under it.
I don't think anything is wrong with the impeller but it's driving me NUTS!

Thanks for your help,

Dont know what the deal is with those things. I had the same issue, and have seen others post the same. Mine was hideously loud. I replaced it with an Eheim 1260 which is almost dead silent (is it on?) and has a ton more flow to boot.

A foam pad works, but may collect detritus. Try a mouse pad. Cut it in half, put one half on top of the other, and the pump on top. Works for me...

OH, even better, Radio Shack type stores sell small rubber feet with adhesive backing. Then tend to vibrate out of postion, but a little silicon will hold them in place.

If its anything like mine, none of that helps. Its just too loud. My tank is on the main level of the house and I could hear it upstairs. I tried every trick in the book and none of it made an appreciable difference.

It is interesting you say that. I swapped my Iwaki WMD-40RLT for a Mag 12 because the Iwaki was making a racket. Now I have two Mag18's, a Mag12 and a Mag 7 all running and none of them making much noise at all.

I've owned Mag3/5/7/9.5. None of them were quiet, but the Mag7 was by far the loudest of any of them for some reason. I doubt that I would find a Mag12 or 18 quiet.

I had a Mag 36 for one day. Had to get rid of it...now have 2 Quiet One 4000's. Not even sure they are on except for watching the water surface.

i use a mag 9.5 as a return and its quiet. Has a very slight hum if your ear is right next to it. Does your pump need cleaned? Maybe run it in some vinegar after you clean it out.

I am running an OceanRunner 2500 (submersed) & 3500 (externally). I barely know they are on. Very quiet, I was impressed. I have the external on top of two thin mousepads. I also use flex-pvc.

I have a Mag 9.5 running my skimmer. They are connected using a short length of flex tube and the only way I know mine works is to look at the skimmer column...very quiet pump IMO.

I think it's just luck. My Mag 7 is loud, even on a rubber pad and after being cleaned. Probably going to go the Eheim 1260 route as well.

Not really. The eheim will add some heat. It is rated similarly to the mag 7 (65W for the eheim, 70W for the mag 7).

I don't think you'll be disappointed. The eheim is a nice pump.

One word about noise. The 1260 will still vibrate some. Depending on how it is plumbed or what it is bumping up against it can still cause noise. If it isn't transmitting vibrations by bumping against the side of the sump, or transmitting through entirely rigid plumbing then you shouldn't have any problems. It is fairly simple to set it up so that you don't hear it at all. FWIW, I have heard that eheims are used for liquid coolant circulation by the ultra quiet computing crowd.
