Hang over tank refugium Vs. Sump refugium

I have a 42 gal tank and was wondering if I buy a hang over tank refugium Dimensions: 14" x 4.5" x 12" (3 gallon capacity) would it be enough?

I could put a 10 gallon sump refugium but I am paranoid about flooding the whole floor when the power goes out. At least I don't have to worry about water spill if I have a hang over tank refugium.

Here is the hang over tank refugium that I am talking about.

if you plumb it right, you dont have to worry about any flooding. But the general idea is that the more groundspace your fuge has, the more pods it will produce. That being said, i only had a hob filter on my 55 and turned it to a fuge and it made a whole ton of pods.

get what works best for you. I would do the 10 gallon ref myself. More water volume and the larger the ref the more it helps the tank out. You can build the ref and test where the water rises to when the power shuts off. Then mark the line to where the water drains up to. Real simple. good luck with what ever you decide.

The bigger the better when it comes to refugiums.

yes bigger is definatley better. Like i say, i only had a small hob on my 55 and had GREAT results. I can only imagine what a whole 10 gallon tank would do

Any size is better than no refugium at all.

I only had room for the larger HOB fuge (24x4.5x12) for a while.
I added a 25g sump and a 10g fuge later and I have tons of pods and macro (chaeto) growth has slowed down.

It will cost me about $112 for the HOB refugium.

By the way, would hanging a lot of stuffs in the back of the tank increase the risk of the tank leaking or breaking?

I am planning to hang stuffs like the Remora protein skimmer and the AquaClear filter. If I add the HOB refugium, it would just add more weight to the back.

My tank is an all glass tank and not an acrylic one.

I have both a Remora and a large Aquafuge on the back of my glass 55g and no problems. I was told they put downward pressure on the glass.

The dimensions you gave, do they include the drain and intake on the front? Or do I need 4.5" from back of tank to the wall to make this fit?

I have a L. Aquafuge w/P.S on my 100 gal and plan on putting a deltec HOB as well. to ease the pressure on the tank, I am planning to put some type of pedestel of sort to have the fuge weight be taken of the tank. You could build one yourself. Just measure the height of what you need, and have the fuge lay of the pedestel and just have the intake and exhaust of the fuge in the tank.
