Watch out for family members who mean well...
I've seen a few threads about family members 'cleaning' people's tanks, or bringing unsuitable animals home, even adding them to someone's reef as a surprise... I'm very glad my husband wasn't alone yesterday or I might have lost half my fish!
Yesterday time was tight, we had lots to do, and I wanted to pick up some nassarius snails. Because I knew exactly what I wanted, I almost sent him to the LFS alone while I stayed behind to do other things, but decided to go with him even though we'd be in and out in a couple minutes -- I just can't resist a trip to the fish store (I can't go alone, I don't drive). While we were there, my husband fell in love with a 4" baby panther grouper. He said it looked friendly and was really cute, and even after I told him why it was NOT a good idea to add a large predator to a 65g reef full of bite-sized fish he still wanted to buy it. He was practically looking back over his shoulder at the fish as we left. I shudder to think of what might have happened if I was away and he'd bought me this 'friendly' fish as a gift!

That sux. Whatch for kids adding pennies to a wish fountain too!
Fwiw, your pet store should know better too. And should ask what fish you have to your husband.

Uhh ... So if he had brought the fish home, you would have acclimated it and then put it in your tank instead of taking it right back to the LFS?

When I got my tank the previous owner had koi. And apparently the tank was hard to keep alive ~~~~ I got it dirt cheap and when I was cleaning out the rocks. Its a 150 so there were a lot of rocks. You know what I find. 3 corroded AA batteries. I had to tell the previous owners. They were under 3 inches of rock so it was obvious they were placed there by someone.

Yea sulphuric acid and iron oxide , along with aluminum would definitely make an aquarium hard to keep. I cant believe that!

i came home once from work to find 12 sand sifting sea stars in my tank......thanks to a little brother who had fun collecting them at the beach a few hours away. i set up a seperate tank just for them until i can find them a home.

![]() Corroded batteries?! Oh my. When I posted I was thinking about innocent mistakes meant by those who mean well (like children adding soap so Nemo can have a bubble bath), the thought of someone deliberately placing something poisonous into an aquarium didn't even cross my mind. Some people really are awful.
