X10 is a (somewhat old) control system which can signal over your household electrical wiring. You have an X10 "base" which your controller talks to, and each device you want to control has an X10 lamp module which you set a unique address on (like A08, or B12). You simply then program the controller to turn A08 on or off on whatever parameters it supports (temp, light, etc). The device plugs into the lamp module, which plugs into a power outlet. Note that the lamp modules do take space so they're not so handy on power strips.
