particle size of organics?

Hi randy!

I just read through your latest phosphate article. Great material =)

I have a question in regards to organics in the aquarium...
I have been told that both carbon and Purigen (made by seachem) remove organics.

To my understanding, carbon removes organics of many sizes. both "Macro-organics" and "micro-organics". (I'm not sure what micron size those terms refer to).

What are these so called "organics" that are being removed from the water? I understand that taanin's are one of them. Do you have any further reading you can point me to in regard to the various sizes and types of organics that are remove by carbon?

Thanks!

Micro = 0 - 2 nm diameter
Meso = 2 - 50nm
Macro= > 50 nm

nm = nanometer or 1 / 1,000,000,000. 1 billionth of a meter.

This will give you an idea on organics

In summary of the article, carbon and other types of media will mostly be removing dissolved organics, but may also remove some very small particulates. Skimming will remove some types of dissolved and particulate organics. Ozone can help to break down both.
