Wavemaker

What does a wavemaker do? How does it work? Can they be used in a nano tank? Is this Red Sea Wavemaker any good? Most importantly to me, how much electricity do they use?

truely there are 2 typs of wavemakers one is control unit it works with several powerheads to turn them on and off.. turbelle,, red sea wavemaker . the other is intank wavemakers like the wave2K,, sea swirl,,SCWD squid.. i consider nano's 20 gal and less and they usally dont have wave makers in them and they dont use that much elect, unless your waving 250+gallons

Reefing is'nt how long you been in it. It is how deep you get in it.

Current Tank Info: 400g display build, 300g sump, 75g ATO, 75g refug and a few more. Close to a 1000g. 200g mixing station.

thanks. But would using a wavemaker in a 40 gallon tank be overkill? Are the in-tank wavemakers better than the other kind?

The WM Pro is on sale at Marine Depot for $100. I've had one for more than 5 years and it's good. I remember how much better everything looked and behaved when the water movement became back and forth on cycles instead of just in one direction all the time.

Use the WM with maxi-jet powerheads since they seem to handle the on/off very well. For a 45g tank I'd suggest using the 400's or 600's. 2, maybe 3 should do it. Ideal flow for SPS is about 10-15cm/second. You can press a button to turn off the pumps while feeding. You have 4 different settings to choose from for the amount of turbulence. The night setting allows for less turbulence at night.
