Quick Help On A Protein Skimmer, Please Help Anyone
Hello everyone, I have always had a healthy saltwater tank with no protein skimmer, but now its time for me to get one. Please someone give me some help with this question.
I was going to just go buy a hang on skimmer because I don't have a sump. But I noticed the ones that aren't hang on are cheaper. So here is my question, can I hook this one up directly to my tank? http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewIt...product=RS1115 How would this work if I can? |

The hang on version of the same skimmer is only 40 bucks more.Well worth the investment if sumpless.Seems a small price to pay to save retro-fit nightmares.

Unsightly Skimmer Pump
The hang-on version of this protein skimmer is called the Berlin HO. A disadvantage of this type of skimmer is that its external pump will take up space inside your aquarium. Note that when skimmers are advertised, the pictures do not always show the unsightly pumps that are required to run them.
My vote goes to the pricier Deltec MCE300 and MCE600 hang-on-tank (HOT) skimmers. Their pumps are inside the skimmer bodies and do not take up space in your aquarium. They are available from www.deltecusa.us. I wish that they could be more affordable but I think you will be happier with less clutter in your aquarium. |

I do not want to disuade you from hang-on skimmer but, in my experience, skimmers occassionally overflow - sometimes through an additive, new food - who knows what the exact cause. When a hang-on overflows, it's on your floor. A sump will contain potential overflows.
Now, what is the size of your tank? This is the major factor contributing to skimmer selection.
