What kind of paint does everyone use for inside a canopy?

I usually just use Exterior White Paint. Is that alright or should I go with something else?

Also on the stain. I was going to put a 2nd coat on today. The wife is wanting a shiny/glossy look like our furniture in the fish room. Will a coat of polyurethane make it glossy?

I desided to bring one of the cabinet doors in and see how well it matched the other furinture before adding a 2nd coat. I think it matchs really well. So I think I'm going to skip the 2nd coat and go with polyurethane.
What do you guys think?

I used white marine/boat paint for the inside of my canopy.
As far as polyurethane goes, it depends on how shiny you want it. For a medium shine just put one coat on the canopy. If you want it really shiny after the first coat dries sand the canopy with steel wool then apply a second coat.

The color looks good. With oak, multiple coats of finish are a necessity since it's such an open grained/pore wood and absorbs the poly unevenly. Put at least two coats on (scratch the coat between layers as beaker77 noted). When you get to your last coat, you can rub it down a bit with 0000 steel wool until you get the sheen you desire.

This stain says not to sand between coats. The last stain I had said to sand between coats. It also states to darken the color apply 2nd coat. I don't really want it darker. It also says that with this color I cannot use polycrylic. This is Minwax Wood Finish Penetrates, Stains & Seals Red mahogany. Would that make a difference on having to had a 2nd coat?

So it's a Polyshade type finish (stain and finish in one) rather than stain followed by finish coats?

I stay far away from that stuff so I can't help you. I would imagine though that you could follow it up with a few coats of clear shellac (not orange or amber) until you get the build and sheen that you like.

(If you like experimenting, you might try orange first on an inconspicuous spot. It looks like just a touch more red or orange wouldn't hurt the color match.)

Just put the 2nd coat on. Really glad I did because this just made everything look so much better.
