water change using w/ cannister filter

I have this canister filter that i bought when i first started up my aquarium that i no longer use ( my reef is doing very well without it )..

since i had it was wondering if it can be used for water changes.

I was toying with the idea to use it for water changes and wanted to know if this was a good idea or bad one.

day before a water change ( bi weekly ) set it up to run carbon in my tank 12 to 24 hours before a water change.

day of the water change siphon out the amount of water needing to be replaced.

then get my bucket of fresh saltwater, turn off the the power to the canister filter, take the water intake tube of the canister filter and put it in the bucket and power it on to fill the tank up using carbon in the media tray.

of course the cannister filter will be cleaned prior and after each water change.

good or bad idea.
