I just purchased lunar lights for my new 180g tank setup. I'm not 100% sure why (the salesman was pretty good at his job).
I think it will enable you to view nocturnal animals, and also I think it's supposed to help with certain animals' spawning cycles. Plus, if you install the blue lunars, they look pretty neat!

kelly pretty much explained it. Its mostly asthetics (i think thats the word lol...for looks basically), but they're also good for creating the full morning, day, evening, and night cycle..i mean, the lights dont just go out in the ocean. Theres always a bit of moonlight shining in. But as far as i know they're not nessesary for coral growth.

I just started to use some. The dude at the LFS sold me a PC fixture (coralife aqualight I believe) it has two daylight and two actinic and then four 3/4 watt blue leds. The lights all have their own plug so I have each one on its own timer. The LED moon lights stay on 24/7 (I shut them off like one night a week only) - in the morning the actinics come on first and are on for an hour then the daylight kick in. Then at night the daylights turn off first and then an hour later the actinics turn off leaving just the moonlights on. Pretty cool but also probably completely unnessacary. I am pretty sure that moon light are just as sir_dudeguy put - for asthetics only.

Yes, blue ones. Because they make the tank look cool in the dark.

to truly replicate moon light I believe it's at 450-480nm wavelengths.

They make for a very pretty display for night time viewing
as for benefiting the tanks inhabitant's I'm unsure.
