That is a pretty good RO/DI but spend the extra $20 and get the Optima with the refillable DI. You will get better water quality and save money in the long run.
A protein skimmer is necessary if you want to keep SPS and LPS. It makes your life so much easier by removing organics that will pollute the tank unless you are doing almost constant water changes. |

Protein skimmer is by far the most important piece of mechanical equipment needed in a reef or any salt tank for that matter. Im sure you can find a couple people here and there that have ran tanks without skimmers with success but a good 95% of reefers use protein skimmers.

I have heard that you are not supposed to run it 24/7 is that true too?
OK any suggestions for a skimmer?? preferabbly submersable... Also keep in mind once I get this down I plan on upgradeing the tank in a few years. So I want to get one that can handle a bigger tank down the line. any suggestions? |

Yes you run your skimmer 24/7
There are lots of good skimmers out there. I you want to upgrade your tank later you might want to think about what size you are going to go to first. Most people recommend that you buy a Skimmer rated at twice your tank Size. I am about to get an Octopus NW-200 for my 90 gallon. It is an in sump and rated for max 250g tank. I have a seaclone now and all I can say is stay away from them. ASM is another good name to look into. Rick |
