Question Overflow Box Rate Calculation

What is the best way to determine the amount of water an overflow box can handle? Is there some sort of calculation based on the length of the three sides, or does it depend on the number and size of the slots in my cover, or both?

Thanks - wanting to determine if I can pull both my sump water as well as my closed circuit water from my overflow while pumbing the water from both back into the display tank. I was hoping to avoid having to pump water direclty from the main tank for my closed circuit (hoping to put in an ocean motions super squirt.)
