How to tell Magnetic from Electronic ballasts?

This is kind of silly, but my two 150w HQI ballasts don't say if they are magnetic or electronic ballasts.

Is there any way to tell by looking at size/shape of ballast?

Thanks!

Magnetic ballasts are heavy, they have big transformers in them. Electronic ballasts don't weigh much more than the case they are enclosed in.

Magnetic ballasts are usually bigger/taller. Electronic ballasta are usually longer and skinner.

What brand of ballasts do you have?

It's for a Corallife.

Judging by the weight, I guess it's magnetic.

Many Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing so I just climbed on top of the wall my tank is built in to sse my ballasts. Hamalton 175W mag and a 400W Electric.

The are all going on 8 years old. When do these things need to be replaced?
