Unknown *black* ispod ID (PICS)

Hi folks -- Any thoughts on this dark colored isopod I found in my tank? He was crawling on a margarita snail, so I grabbed him, thinking he may be parasitic. I've got many dozens of lighter-colored isopods (see last pic) that, based on articles and images, I'm fairly sure are fine (i.e., not cirolanids). This was the first dark one I've seen, but his morphology (hope I'm using that term correctly) is very similar to the lighter colored ones -- e.g., the two pointed projections from the rear of the isopod, same shape, small eyes (not big like cirolanids), etc. Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated.

Lighter-colored (much more common in my tank)

That's a poser! Maybe you should post in Invertebrates. I know we've got a few experts over there. That's one I've never seen, and I'm glad I haven't!

I'd bet money its from FL somewhere.

I used to have to paint boat bottoms from in the water and after cleaning the barnacles off the bottom I'd have tons of those things trying to crawl inside my wetsuit. Made me wish I had along one instead of a shortie.

Nightmares. eeeushhhh

Yeah, I have seen these before, they are algae eaters. Nice Wilco quote too... I was gonna use the same one.

Rock is from Marshall Island and Fiji, with a couple lbs of Florida-looking (from LFS, unknown) rock in as well. I noticed the majority of the isopods prior to the denser FL rock, but the black one may well have come in on a couple lbs of FL rock. I had a feeling it was a Sphaermatid-style (based on that Shimek article), but I'd been watching too many scary movies to prep for Halloween probably, and the big black one freaked me out. Thanks for the feedback folks! (Isopods are *awesome*.)

Word on Wilco.

The Florida rock I got 10 years ago had amazing life on it - basket stars, brittle stars, pistol shrimp, limpets, oysters, bryozoans, spaghetti worms, tiny crabs & more I can't remember...... but it also came with 3 little trouble making mantis's-grrr!

Amazing stuff though - Is it the shorter trip, I guess ?
