Magnesium levels tough to keep up? Mabe wrong salt help???

Ok I have been using Seachem Reef Salt since day 1....But my magnesium levels stay pretty low...I measured the magnesiun in a 40 gallon water change @ 1.026 and it was 1050....is there a better salt that has better magnesium levels....I always add alot to keep the levels up...but at 1050 and 300 gallons it takes a whole lot????I was thinking of changing over to Reef Crystals...thats what Foster & Smith use I think????any suggestions????

Reef Crystals seems to have consistently high magnesium levels. It does take a lot to boost magnesium levels.

Post how it goes. I am seriously thinking about switching to Reef Crystals myself (from Tropic Marin)

I switched from Reef Crystals to Tropic Marin as I had trouble keeping my alkalinity and calcium up. My calcium was consistantly falling under 350 no matter how much kalk I added. Now with tropic marin I have some troubles with alk but the kalk addition I do seems to keep it in acceptable levels. My magnesium was acceptable with Reef Crystals though. I would recommend Tropic Marin before Reef Crystals just from my personal experience. But everyone has a different experience.

I have not had many problems maintaining levels but have been fighting a consistant DinoF. problem. I have done a bunch of reading on the subject and it seems that TM and TM Pro have measurable phosphates.

Can anyone else comment on this?

Just buy some magflake and epsom salts, and do randy's 3 part. It wont cost you much, and will give you much more control.

You could also dose epsom salts in your tank to keep up magnesium levels.

You can get Epsom salt at any pharmacy. It was much easier for me to find than Mag Flake. Use Randy's dosing calculator to figure out the right amount.

Since mag is a relatively large constituent of sea water it takes a lot to impart a change. Lets say you have a 100 gallon tank and you are 300ppm low, it would take the better part of a 16oz bottle of Kent or ESV to get there.

Randy Holmes farley Recommends the 2 cup Mag chlor hexahydrate AND Epsom salt combo, just re-mixed a gallon of all three today.

What he does not recommend is the Epson salt only route, which accumulates a number of unwanted levels, unlike that of natural sea water.

I was able to use a business licence to purchase the chems bulk from a local chemical wherehouse, i was unable to find a lot of them here is California in the private sector.

do you run a Ca reactor? if you do Zeovit makes these Mg granuals that you put in your Ca reactor and they raise your Mg level.. its an easy fix to your problem and you wont have to "dose"

I would not recommend this product. Its mostly small sized aragonite sand which does not effectively dissolve in aquarium water. The trace elements and claims to raise calcium, alk and magnesium are futile as they are not measurable and alk, ca and mg can not be in solution together for any significant concetration or they will percipitate out.

I use Seachem salt as well and do find it low in Mg. I just add enough Mg to my water change batch to compensate.

Epsom salt is not highly recommended because it increases Sulphates. It does work however for occassional use.

Chris
