Chaeto on the loose!
I added Chaeto to my fuge a few months back and have noticed one major problem with it. It grows quickly (as desired) and like most people with Chaeto I remove some as the ball gets too big. I also have to occasionally clean it out to make sure there is no junk that got caught in it. The problem is that whenever I remove some or disrupt the ball, small pieces from 1/2" - 2" come loose and subsequently make a mess. The seem to be able to make their way through just about any hole. Has anyone come up with some way to prevent this? Thanks for the help.

I have a nice stometella snail population that lives in my cheato ball, it keeps in clean enough that i don't rinse it out anymore, the small pieces that do fall off usually get blown into a spot in the refugium where it gets no lighting, so I let the larger amphipods in the fuge eat on them.

My problem is that it never makes it back to the main tank to be eaten. I have a check valve on the return line that it does a sufficient job of plugging up.

could try separating the cheato ball from the return pump, ie. baffles, sponge, something along that line.
