Caribsea - Seaflor vs sugar sized sand
Anyone have any opinions on Caribsea Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand vs. Caribsea Aragamax Sugar Sized Sand?
I need to get some sand for my new 54g tank setup. I have the Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand now in my small tank and have never had the finer sugar-sized sand before. I was curious to see if there would be any real benefits to going with the finer sugar-sized sand? The LFS that I have credit at only carries the sugar-sized bags. |

It depends on what kind of water movement you have/need. The oolitic sand blow around very easily. This to me is a major downside. At one point I had it and it was always on the bottom half of my rocks. The corners almost never had any sand in them because of the water flow I had.
You may try mixing the two. I eventually did this in that tank. Wherever the sand was blown out, I put a larger particle size.

Also depends on the livestock you put in the tank to some degree. For instance, some of the smaller wrasses require fine sand to burrow in. Is this an issue for you?

My 2 small twin spot gobies can sift through the seaflor sand. It's larger than the sugar fine which helps to keep it on the tank floor.

I used Caribsea Seaflor on my previous setup but when I started over, i used southdown which was a major mistake. Sand particles everywhere. It's depressing. :-(

The Seafloor stuff is really nice. I like it much better than my old Southdown that I had.
Ask them to order it in, I'm sure it won't be a problem. |

Sugar size sand all the way, but no silly homedepot or hardware store sand.
