Lighting and SPS

Hey All,

I have a 125 with 800w of VHO on it. Do you think I would have any success with SPS coral with this amount of light?

Thanks

Yes. Some of them will be fine. Montipora Capricornus (a great addition), Montipora Digitata, Stylophora, Pocilipora, non-pink seriatopora, and maybe some captive grown acropora. Those are the ones that I suggest you look at, but there may be more.

I had some Monti digitata that was first under MH then for about a month it was under VHO. It got very brown. The bulbs I had for the VHO were not the best but, I didn't think that it would get that bad. They didn't die but, they did suffer. I'm back to MH and they are starting to come back.

How much VHO? 440 watts, right? We're talking dual ballast configurations, which is completely different lighting.

I have 2 icecap 660's running 3 10000K actinic whites and 2 Super actinics. Any recomendations on a good place to order some of them from? Also, will they so OK with some softies and LPS? I have 2 ASM G3's and I am also running carbon.

You can get uri bulbs through Marine Depot. Some report better coral growth with Aquasun bulbs vs. the 50/50's. I don't care for them because they give the tank a pink hue.

A good lfs, or if you want to buy them online, I've had good luck from Drs. Foster Smith.

MD ships em free if you buy 6 or more.

I think that you can keep what ever you want with that much light. They may not grow as fast as in some other tanks, and they may not look the same either. But, with food to eat (water flow), calcium and carbonate, they should do just fine. I say go for it.

Jetdrvr, I think what Ant is stating is that sps, and lps can change color under vho or mh lighting. When I take an sps frag from his tank and put it in my lps tank ( from mh to vho) most of the acro frags turn a different color.
