pump for phosban reactor

I just ordered a phosban reactor and was wondering which pump works best for them.

I don't have one of those laying around, I have a few different small powerheads laying around. I just don't know the names off hand. Will the reactor pretty much fit most pumps?

You'll need to get some 1/2" hose for it.

TLF and Marine Depot told me they suggest the Mini-Jet 606.

The 606 is pushing around 153gph and the 404 or MJ400 around 108gph. Like I said "I'm using a MJ400 and its throttled way back"

I use MJ400 and I have to dial back the flow also. 100gph is more than enough flow for the reactor.

I'm running a Mini Jet 404, I believe it is, on my Phos-Reactor from Kent Marine. I have it running at full strength and it's just perfect for that reactor.

they recommend 80-90 gph max per the reactor specs.. any more than that and it won't work right, or the Phos media will dissolve, or something.

MJ400 dialed in about 3/4 of full power on my TLF reactors.

Funny the told me to get the Mini-Jet 404 Powerhead.

You have to use a ball valve to control the flow (which comes with it) to where there is a slight aggitation on the surface of the media and even better none at all.

Son of a gun.

No, I'm sure either is fine. The 606 can do 82-153 gph and the 404 can do 18-108 gph. It is funny though that the two tell one person one answer and turn around and say something different to another. Maybe it just depends on which rep you're talking to? I think both answers work though, so it's not misleading.

You're assuming people are running full force on the Minis (153 gph is obviously too much), when there is actually a range of flow thanks to the dial. The dial on the Mini-Jets is great, allowing you to easily dial in the appropriate flow - not a feature on Maxi-Jets.

When I hook it up should I just use half of the media to start, I don't want to shock the system.

Thanks for all the input.

My tank is a 90g.

I use a Via Aqua 360. I originally had a MJ 600 hooked up to it, but had to throttle the pump way back, like 85%. The Via Aqua is a great match. The top of the media is only barely disturbed during use.

Depends on your level of Phosphates, If it is around 0.06 or less you can use full, if higher use half or less.

Currently I don't own a phosphate test kit and have heard mixed reviews on the readings from phos test kits. I know I should get one, but which kind. I like salifert kits, is their phosphate kit good?

I was planning on starting off with half the media just to be safe.

I have had issues with hair algae and bubble algae in the past and currently there is some hair algae. I know my phosphate level can't be good.
I will be upgrading my flow with 2 seio 1100's here soon which should also help.

Salifert, Hach and Red Sea are all workable, just do not expect an accurate reading below 1 ppm Below that if you detect any color, you are above 0.05, no color you are below 0.05 ppm (kind of Yes / No test)
For a more accurate reading ).01 to 0.05 ppm you need a colorimeter.
