Fan's Really work!
I was really scared of buying mh's because I really didn't/don't want a chiller. I ended up buying 3 x 250 mh's and 3 x 80 watt t5's and hoping for the best. After I set it up the water temp flucuated from 78.5 to about 83.5. Then i bought 1x 4.75" fan and installed it in the canopy. This brought the temp to a high of 82. Then I bougth two more 6" clip on fans, I put one in the hood and one on the sump (pointing directly into the water in the sump). Now my temp never exceeds 81.1!
eveporated cooling is great!

I'll be curious to know how much more water is evaporated with the fans as opposed to without. I think I need to do something similar in the future.

Thanks. in my 110 I'm about 1/2 gal per day. I guess I can expect to go up to about 2 gal or so.

6" Clip-On Fan, 2-Speed, 3-6/11"x2-1/6"x5-2/17", Light Gray
Other products by Atlantic Breeze -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- List Price: $10.99 Price: $9.04 Sale: $8.90 You Save: $2.09 (19%) the 6" fans I got from Amazon ^^ the 4.75" I got from the LFS, it is a traditional aquarium fan. I really like the clip on's, much more productive then the traditional aquarium fan (I'm not sure the brand but I think it was ~65 cfm)

I agree. Fans are great help to reduce heat. I've got four 80mm computer fans in my canopy, and an 8" fan blowing over my sump (only on when necessary). Be aware that we're in the cooler months now, so fans are adequate at keeping temps down. In the hotter months my fans are no match to keep the temp down. My 2 cents.

I relied strictly on fans for two summers. I had 2x4" fans in the canopy that used to run 24/7 and a 7" clip on fan over the sump. My temp never went over 82 and was normally 80 to 81. My evaporation was killing me though at 6 gallons every other day and the house was like a swamp when you walked in the door, it made it hard to sleep at night.
I added a chiller before this summer and now the tank stays at 81 all time with the 2 canopy fans on a timer with the MH lights. The clip on fan is on a Ranco controller set to come on if the temp rises 2 degrees and never runs. Humidity is now tolerable although I about choked when I opened my August power bill! Top off is now 5 to 6 gallons every four days so it cut it a little more than in half. |
