HOB Skimmer for 150G Tank?

Title says it all. I need a good HOB skimmer for a 150G Reef Tank.

Thought about using a Remora Pro but not sure if it can handle it. The Super Skimmer is out the door unless someone can tell me how to adjust it so it doesn't spill everything onto the floor.

There isn't a HOB skimmer that can handle a 150G reef tank (at least I have never heard of one). But the Deltec MCE600 is the closest thing.

Maybe a Tunze DOC 9010 in tank skimmer. They are small (L4.9 x W4.4 x H16.8 in.)

I can’t tell you if these are the best HOB skimmers for your tank but they are certainly the biggest HOB/HOT skimmers that I have come across in my very limited experience (www.lifereef.com):

Lifereef HVS2-24 Hang-On with MagDrive 9 pump
Lifereef HVS3-24 Hang-On with MagDrive 9 pump

If I were u I would either use a Deltec MCE600 or a Tunze Comline or DOC model. The DEltec hangs on the outside of the thank while the Tunze will be mounted internally. Both are great skimmers and around the same price.....with the Deltedc being slightly more expensive.

If you can install a sump, you will have much more choices.

An AP600 wont handle a 150, so theres no way that the MCE will come even close.

No one said he had to skim the hell out of his tank. You could run TWO mce600's. or not, just a suggestion

$ to $$$

There are a number of HOT skimmer choices with that capacity. Here's a few from $141 to $479:

- Coralife Super Skimmer 220
- Turboflotor 1000 Multi
- Lifereef HVS2-24 & HVS3-24

No endorsement. The only HOT skimmers that I have used or seen in action are the Deltecs and the Remoras and they seem undersized for your 150 gallon system.

And none of those will ACTUALLY handle a 150.

Anyone who has used a skimmer knows the capacities are a joke. I replaced a Turboflotor 1000 because it couldnt handle my 58.

Given the mixed reviews in the forums, I believe you. I haven't found much forum feedback on the Lifereef skimmers. What is the actual capacity of the Lifereef HVS2-24 & HVS3-24?

A turboflotor 1000 is suppose to be able to handle this size tank, i've heard many great things about it. I have a 125 g reef, with a aqua c remora pro, extra tall skimmate cup and mag 7 running it. It does more than enough for the tank, pulling over a gallon a week of nasty skimmate. I would think this would do fine with your tank. Especially if your total water volume is actually less than 150g. Hope this helps. Check out www.premiumaquatics.com they have it all ready for you. Thats where i got mine, and they were the best price and great to work with.

Whats the livestock in the tank going to be? U may not need over excessive skimming. You could always use multiples.....its hard to find a good skimmer for a 150g reef tank. Most skimmers are either too big or too small. Just keep askin around maybe look at the used or classifieds.

I run a life reef svs 2-24 on a 125g tank, with 40g sump, and a 20g fuge, for a total of 185g...and the skimmer does an awsome job. that skimmer would easily handle a heavily stocked 200g with ease...Give jeff a call at life reef, and he'll tell ya all about it...

Question Best Way to Plumb Turboflotor

Rich,

How did you configure your Turboflotor?

Did you plumb the overflow to your Turboflotor or did you simply let its feed pump draw from the sump?

It would be interesting to hear from your experience which configuration is the most effective.

Thanks!

Mine was the multi, I believe. I bought it used, and in its current configuration, it had to be run with the feed pump (OR2700), and not as a recirc. It was a decent skimmer, pretty decent, but its still a 4" bodied skimmer.

You should be looking at a tall 6" diameter skimmer at the very least, or preferably, an 8" bodied skimmer for this tank.
