Skimmer in a Bucket?

I havent got the right conditions to run a sump.......ive got a HOT skimmer at the moment...

If i wanted to upgrade to an insump type skimmer later...can i just put the output of a cannister filter into a bucket or simliar...then chuck the skimmer in that... then have a return pump to pump back into the tank? i already have a canister lying around.

if it is... then what would the return pump have to be rated at...? the same as the output of the cannister? more? less?

thanks...

31" x 31" x 28" Cube.
Fowlr ... setting up stages...

thats dangerous territory when you realy on a pump to balance the level. Its a real good way to pump all the water out of the aquarium. You want gravity to feed it and a pump to pump it out. So do something like add a another overflow box to your aquarium and add a pump to the bucket, then it will be balanced. Unless of course your pump in the bucket fails then the sump pump will overfill it. At least with the method described above you wont have to balance the pumps. Best would be to just run one pump and one overflow.
