Skimmer Cleaning...
In the ...filtration forum I noticed a thread called something like "SKIMMATE"
So I browsed through the entire thread and found some pretty gross jpeg's!!! So how often does a skimmer need to be cleaned and is it always that gross? My wife and I are going to start up a 150g tank with sump and skimmer in the tank stand. She's not home for about 4 days in a row every week because of her job. I'm home even less. The LFS knows about our working schedules and hasn't mentioned there might be a problem. But if my wife gets a glimpse of those pics she'll puke!!! I'm pretty sure either one of our 2 felines won't clean the skimmer either!!! Thanks for the input in advance... |

Well even though you're a TS fan I'll try to help out You can run the skimmer dry so it won't overflow for you or you can run a hose from the cup to a bigger container that it can all drain into.

Nevermind what it looks like, wait until she gets a whiff of what that skimmate smells like!! The George Thorogood song, "Move it on Over" comes to mind.
I empty my cup every Sunday, but like stated above, you should be able to adjust your skimmer accordingly. I clean the riser tube every other day to keep production at full blast.

I am indeed a newby, but my past (unsuccessful) attempt at FO tank was a sure disaster based on the advice and misinformation of the LFS. IMO they are out to make money, pay their bills (can you blame them) and will sell you anything they can without consideration for what is best. ie. I was sold a mandarin goby (reportedly one of the most difficult fish to keep) by my LFS, and was told he would be fine in my FO tank and that he would be easy to care for, needless to say the poor fish died a few weeks later. Continue to ask for help here, these guys are wonderful and very informative and it has nothing to do with paying their bills.

Dubbin... What does NORA stand for. I did a search and came up with many listings.
kelrn98... I'm sorry to hear you've had bad experiences with your LFS. I on the other hand have been to a few in my area and have gotten great advice as well as prices. I will agree that this site/forum is a great place for a wealth of knowledge. Like anything though, you have to weed through the B.S. and keep the good stuff. |

Yes you want it to be gross cuz thats what it collects out of the tank. If it collected clear water it wouldnt be working lol.
Think of it like the crud waves wash up on the beach. That's what it does. I'm a female and I clean mine all the time. I'd rather clean my skimmer cup than change a poop pants lol. As others have said you can put a drain on it or set it to skim dryer so it can go for longer without cleaning. kass |
