Question Charcoal, it's all the same?

Just wondering, do we really need to pay that extra amount of money for high quality charcoal? How come freshwater charcoal cannot be used in marine aquariums?
I will gladly pay for high quality charcoal but i've learned that the pet store will sell "expensive baking soda" to raise alkalinity.-- do they do the same for charcoal as well?

Most of the low quality activated carbon will leach phosphates into your water.
