refugium/canister filtration

new to the hobby...move this if it should be in newbies
I have a 75 gal tank with LR and a 2 dmsels, clown and a large snowfllake eel. my problem/question is. I inherited this tank and livestock from a guy who was NOT taking care of it/ I have removed the undergravel filter I have a power head running for circulation and a biowheel 400 currently..
I want to set up a sump in the near future but I need some more filtration NOW could I use a canister filter now and then later use it as the return pump after I get the sump/efugium set up later?
I would of course take the cartridge out at that point.
any thoughts would be greatly appeciated.
