silent return pump

Hi,

I need a new return pump for my 50gal set up, something in the 300-500gph range. Right now I have a RIO 1100 that I'm not happy with, was thinking of getting a Mag 5, I know they are a much better product, but are they more quiet? Any reviews on ViaAqua pumps? Any other recommendations?

Cheers,

For a 50G, an Eheim 1250 would work well. If you really want 300 - 500 GPH, the 1260 would do that.

Eheim all the way. Less eletricity than the mag, this means less heat. The Eheims are so much more effecient than the mags that they convert the energy into spinning motion isntead of heat like mags. Mags are also known for vibration noise. I think one reason they are popular is that they are made in the US. That makes them a bit cheaper than German imported Eheims. I once read a thread where a guy was upset that a 22 YO Eheim pump quit working. He did not realize that he could still get the impeller from his lfs. Sure enough 4 hours later he was up and runnign again for $15. Now that's a bargain.

Eheim all the way...........mag drives are decent pumps but Eheims beat them in every aspect. They use way less energy, have great flow, and are great with head pressure.

Get the Eheim; it's quiet and efficient. Much better build quality than the Mag & Rio I used to own.

the 1250 will be great on that tank, the 1260 is about double the price

thanks for the replies everyone, the eheim1250 is looking like the top runner, but it looks really tall, 4.7", my sump water level needs to be at 4.25" inches, is the hight reported for 1250 from base to the end of the output nozzle? If it is and the pump's intakes are cleanly below the 4.25" line I think it is a go. Can anyone comfirm this for me?

Thanks,

Josh

The smallest I have is a 1260 and from the measurement I took it appears to be about 4.25" tall. The pumps intake is exactly half that. The nice thing about them is that they are NPT threaded on intake and return side. A friend of mine was running a sump with about 2" of water in it and screwed a street ell (male thread by slip) into the intake and pointed it down. This left about 1/2" below the 90 to intake water. Worked perfectly. Will work for you as well. I wish I could find it but another friend jsut got a 1260 really cheap online, like $100 from Big Al's or Marine Depot. Sorry, I wish I knew exaclty where. I know for fact that's not unbelievable because I got my 1262's for $115 from a friend that is a wholesaler and he made a profit.

Sounds like you are looking for a submersible pump for use inside the sump. Eheims are very good pumps. Quiet One are pretty good as well. I would say for sure to stay away from ViaAqua pumps.
